Advertising

Every street is covered in adverts of one form or another. Predominantly from international companies who can afford to advertise. Again, showing their inventive nature, most adverts are painted onto any spare wall, door, curbstone, or simply a rag tied between any two relatively solid objects.

The phone companies seem to have one of the best strategies, or at least one of the most visible and frequent (on a 10 minute drive through the city, I counted 50 adverts for the 4 mobile phone networks). One of their more popular methods is to paint huge murals on hundreds of walls along the city's streets. They have even written "stick no bill' in the corner of many ads, in the hope that no one else will realise the value of this prime marketing real estate.

Many other traders have painted detailed pictures of their wares on the outside of their shops/huts, often with extreme accuracy. There are very very few printed signs or adverts, but who needs an expensive printer when you have a large labour force ready to paint the town red. Or orange in the case of Africell, one of the self-proclaimed largest GSM mobile phone operators - if their adverts are to be believed. Their murals are bright orange, and it seems that no one has yet dared break their 'stick no bill' rule.
