February & March Trips to Sierra Leone

In February 2008, Murray Forsyth and Claire Curtis-Thomas MP visited Sierra Leone for a week long trip to gain support from various government ministries, including the Planning, Education & Health Ministers (insert link to RWB03).

In March 2008, Murray Forsyth, Sebastian Wood (Ramboll Whitbybird) and Nick Willson (Willson & Bell Architects) visited Sierra Leone for a week of Value Engineering sessions with Sierra Leonean Contractors, Quantity Surveyors and Architects with an aim of reducing the cost of the library and also ensuring local skills and materials were used as fully as possible during the construction. This involved exchanging ideas on what is best practice in both the uK and Sierra Leone. As a result of these workshops, we reduced the price by approximately one quarter, mainly by using locally sourced materials (rather than importing specialist materials from the UK), and also changing some of the construction techniques to those more applicable to Sierra Leone.

Over the coming months we will finalise the design and aim to start on site at the beginning of October.
